MeatIne - Produção, distribuição e consumo de carne e desigualdades sociais

Há mais na carne do que o seu valor nutricional. A sua produção e consumo espelham códigos socioculturais, formulados em contextos de relações humano-animais específicas. Focando-se neste bem alimentar – a carne –, o projeto MeatIne pretende investigar a relação entre desigualdades sociais e produção, distribuição e consumo alimentares em sociedades passadas. A análise circunscreve-se à cidade de Évora entre os séculos XIV e XVII, por forma a constituir uma amostragem representativa da diversidade sociocultural dessas comunidades numa cronologia longa, que possibilite comparações entre períodos de estabilidade e de instabilidade. O MeatIne pretende: reconstruir padrões de consumo alimentar, identificar estruturas de distribuição e abastecimento, determinar a origem da carne distribuída e consumida e avaliar a influência das desigualdades socioculturais e económicas no acesso e consumo. Para isso adotará uma metodologia interdisciplinar, que cruzará a análise de fontes de arquivo e de remanescentes osteológicas, humanas e animais.​

MeatIne - Meat production, distribution and consumption and social inequalities

There is more to meat than its nutritional value. Its production and consumption reflect sociocultural codes shaped within specific human–animal relationships. Focusing on this food commodity—meat—the MeatIne project aims to investigate the relationship between social inequalities and the production, distribution, and consumption of food in past societies. The analysis is limited to the city of Évora between the 14th and 17th centuries, in order to build a representative sample of the sociocultural diversity of these communities over a long chronology, enabling comparisons between periods of stability and instability. MeatIne aims to: reconstruct patterns of food consumption, identify distribution and supply structures, determine the origin of the meat distributed and consumed, and assess the influence of sociocultural and economic inequalities on access and consumption. To this end, it will adopt an interdisciplinary methodology that combines the analysis of archival sources with osteological remains, both human and animal.​
